A garden wedding at Aberfoyle Mill
Aberfoyle Mill, just south of Guelph, is one of those venues that feels like it was made for photographs. The old stone mill, the lush gardens, the white gazebo and the little wooden footbridge give you a different backdrop around every corner, all within a few steps of each other.
M and M’s day started with the small details: the rings, the delicate back of the gown from Sixpence Bridal Studio, and the bridesmaids in soft blush getting ready together. The groom waited by the old windows of the mill, and the bride’s father walked her down the garden path to the gazebo, where Maeck Weddings led an outdoor ceremony surrounded by family and friends.
Portraits in the gardens
After the ceremony we had the wedding party in the gardens, and this group did not need any encouragement to have fun. Some of my favourite frames from the day are the candid ones, with everyone laughing and moving instead of standing in a line. For the portraits of the two of them, we walked to the wooden footbridge and the willow trees by the water, where the light comes through the leaves and everything feels quiet and romantic.
Planning a wedding at Aberfoyle Mill
- Ceremony: the gazebo in the gardens is a beautiful spot for an outdoor ceremony, with plenty of room for guests on the lawn.
- Portraits: the footbridge, the willows and the stone walls of the mill are all close by, so you can get a lot of variety without losing time travelling between locations.
- Light: in the summer, plan portraits for the last hour or two before sunset. The trees soften the light beautifully.
- Weather plan: the mill’s interior has plenty of character, so a rainy day still gives you lovely photos.
