Rainy January // Engagement // Cambridge, ON

Filed in Engagement — February 8, 2018

Although we were planning for a snowy winter session, Nicole and Justin’s engagement date ended up falling on a warm January weekend. YES. These photos were taken in the middle of a Canadian winter! Very unusual, but I was happy to not have to wear my usual 5 layers of clothing.

Here are some highlights from my session with these two. Enjoyyy

A mild winter session in Cambridge

Nicole and Justin’s session proved you don’t need perfect weather for beautiful photos. Instead of fresh snow, we had a grey, mild January evening with just a few patches of snow left on the ground, and it gave their photos a soft, moody feel I love.

Colour against the graffiti

We started in front of a huge graffiti wall, all bright pinks, oranges and greens. Nicole’s red sweater looked amazing against it, and Justin kept it classic in a dark jacket. These two were so much fun, with lots of laughing, a big scoop off her feet and a few quiet moments too. They even showed off their tiny matching elephant tattoos.

Golden grass and tall trees

Next we headed out to a field of tall, golden winter grass, where Justin gave Nicole a piggyback and the warm tones of the grass made her red sweater pop. Her ring got its own close-up among the leaves. Then we walked into a forest of tall, bare trees, which looked so peaceful in the soft winter light.

A twirl on the road

We finished on a quiet country road with snow along the edges, with a twirl and a walk hand in hand.

Tips for a winter engagement session

  1. Wear a bold colour. Red, mustard or emerald stands out against grey skies and winter grass.
  2. Don’t cancel for the weather. Grey days give soft, even light and a lovely moody feel.
  3. Mix city and nature. A graffiti wall and a forest in one session give you two very different looks.
